History of the First Baptist Church of Healdsburg

Stained glass window; Actual size=130 pixels wide

The First Baptist Church has a rich history and heritage in the Healdsburg area for more then a 150 years. Our church was founded on September 14th, 1850 when the original church covenant was adopted and signed. It was originally called the First Baptist Church of Russian River which met in the Manzanita District Schoolhouse. In 1858 Harmon Heald (founder of Healdsburg) donated lots on Center St. and Mill St. to erect a house of worship. In 1868 the church changed the name to the First Baptist Church of Healdsburg and purchased a new lot on Sheridan St. (now called Fitch St.) The original building was moved and dedicated in 1871 where it still stands today. The front auditorium was dedicated in 1908 and incorporated the old building to be used as a Sunday School. The main auditorium and Sunday School were designed to be thrown together when needed to seat 450 persons. We invite you to become a part of the church today and a piece of its history tomorrow.
